Beaches in Santo Domingo

The Dominican Republic has many beautiful beaches. Some of the best are now private tourist resorts, such as Casa de Campo and Punta Cana, with luxurious hotels and golf courses. These resorts do not show you how the Dominican people live. There are two beaches near Santo Domingo that I visited frequently. The first one is La Caleta, a small beach near the airport. This beach is used by fishermen and a few locals.

La Caleta has a museum of Taino Indian culture, with history and artifacts from around the year 1250.

The most popular beach near Santo Domingo is Boca Chica because the water is shallow and suitable for children.

At the East end of Boca Chica is the Hamaca Hotel and Neptuno's restaurant, with its own private beach for its customers.
